JOHNSON HOUSE

Located on 112 acres of premium grape vineyards, this vintage 1908 two- story ranch house is comfortably appointed and beautifully situated on a grassy rise overlooking the Illinois Valley and the nearby Klamath Range. Emblematic of yesteryear’s early twentieth century ranch living, five spacious bedrooms, upstairs and down, sleep up to twelve people. It is popular for family reunions, multi-couple gatherings, business retreats, or for those who simply enjoy plenty of space.

Private, secluded, and convenient to hundreds of square miles of federally protected mountain trails and tranquil backcountry roads, a stay at the Johnson House affords unlimited opportunities for lovers of the out-of-doors. Hiking, bird watching, horseback riding, bicycling, river rafting, creek-walking, kayaking, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, wine tasting, rock climbing, spelunking, or simply exploring one of the last unspoiled wilderness wonderlands on the Pacific west coast are but some of the readily available options to those with a heart for the rare and remarkable.

The Johnson House itself retains the name of the family that built it and the big barn in the first decade of the last century. The hand-hewn beams in the barn and granary show some of their craftsmanship. The Johnsons might have been farmers by trade, but they were musical by tradition. They played fiddles with a passion and maintained a pump organ at the main house. Over several generations, they excelled at folk, ragtime, and flapper music for local Grange Hall events. And when they weren’t farming or playing their fiddles, the family made a fair share of their own violins. One maple tree felled in 1932 supplied about 60 violin backs, and some of the instruments have sold for up to $25,000. In 1996, at age 80, one of the Johnson girls still played in the Paris, California symphony. So, if you hear a hint of fiddle music outside late at night, it may not be the breeze in the maples. It might just as easily be the spirits of the Johnsons at their strings.
